The two small oil tablets, made from cigar boxes, as attested by the original stamp and labels on the back of both, and assembled like a diptych through the sober wooden frame that bears the engraving in capital letters The search for light by Angelo Morbelli , are sketches for the central image of the triptych Sogno e Realtà, which today works in the collections of the Cariplo Foundation in Milan. Conceived in the form of a triptych, Dream and Reality, also known as Il Sogno or La Vita, consists of a rectangular support closed between two of similar shape but with an arched profile drawn at the top. In the side canvases, in a ghostly light, a man and a woman of advanced age face each other, bent by a deep sleep, in the central canvas (of which our two sketches), like an apparition emanating from the sleepers, two lovers of their backs are encircled in a romantic embrace in the presence of the immense nothingness, near a parapet that borders on the adjacent squares, connecting the three moments, to re-tie an impossible space-time continuity.
