The show

Starting from Saturday 27 August and until 8 January 2023, the Francesco Podesti Civic Art Gallery will host the masterpieces of the Johannesburg Art Gallery: among the artists on display there will be Monet, Signac, Courbet, Degas, Sisley, Derain, Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani , Bacon, Warhol.

The title of the exhibition explains the complexity and interest of the operation, which, thanks to the work of the curators Simona Bartolena and Stefano Zuffi , will bring sixty-three works to the Marche capital, which will be distributed, inside the Pinacoteca, in a path integrated with that of the permanent collection. The story that will be offered to the visitor will not only be that of a long, composite and very important segment of the history of art at an international level, through the works of some of the most important artists of all time, but will also trace the cultural profile, for the most unprecedented, of a young and dynamic city, in which, alongside the most famous cultural, historical and natural suggestions, there is an art scene and a museum, of which the Johannesburg Art Gallery is one of the main expressions, capable of communicating with equal with the most famous international artistic circles.

The exhibition actually reflects the artistic-cultural growth path of the city of Johannesburg and in particular of the Johannesburg Art Gallery (Jag), founded in the 10s of 1900 by the collector Dorothea Sarah Florence Alexandra Ortlepp Phillips, better known as Lady Florence Phillips, with the intention of transforming a mining center, grown around the wealth of its deposits, into a city based on the models of European capitals, with a museum that was not just a space in which to collect works of art and exhibit them, but a place for civil society.

The first section of the exhibition is dedicated to the English scene of the nineteenth century , very present in the museum's collection not only for the very close link of the society that gave life to the Art Gallery with British environments, but also because some donations have further enriched the collection with Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite works.

The second section traces the French scene of the nineteenth century , from the experience of the barbizonniers - well represented by a poetic landscape by Corot - to the realism of Courbet - present in the exhibition with a splendid glimpse of the cliffs of Étretat -, to arrive, passing through Monet , Sisley and Degas, up to the generations of post-impressionism. A heterogeneous section, which includes a few decades of painting but a surprising variety of languages, suggesting a well-known but always interesting path, which starts from the research on reality of the great fathers of the movement, continues in the golden years of impressionism to arrive to those who, on the strength of formal experimentation and the conquests of the nouvelle peinture, have gone further, opening the doors to the twentieth century. Present in the section, in addition to the key personalities of this epochal turning point - such as Cézanne and Van Gogh - also artists such as Signac, Le Sidaner, Vuillard, Bonnard and others.

The third section is occupied by the most recent twentieth-century nucleus of the museum , where the protagonists of the early twentieth century scene are represented: from Derain to Picasso, from Modigliani to Matisse. The path then continues after World War II, with works by important masters of the international scene, among which a painful portrait of Francis Bacon stands out. A further section is dedicated to the South African scene , Lady Phillips' art of the world. The works exhibited are signed by artists well representative of a context that has always struggled between different cultures, divided between local traditions and European influences.
