The Diocesan Museum of Agrigento is located in the historic center of the city and is located in the Halls of the nearby Palazzo Vescovile. The Museum was born between 1958 and 1963 by the will of the Bishop of Agrigento Monsignor Giovanni Battista Peruzzo with the architectural project of the museographer Franco Minissi. Through the exhibition rooms, the museum traces the significant history of the works of sacred art from Agrigento from 1100 to the nineteenth century. The collection was established over the years thanks to donations from Bishops and faithful linked to the diocese. The Museum preserves the Treasures of the Cathedral which represent the artistic entities already important for the faith. The rich collection includes various kinds of artifacts: the sarcophagus of Phaedra, the Attic vase of "Ulysses", the sarcophagus known as "of the coronaries" and many others. Thanks to the restorations it was possible to bring to light the medieval frescoes hidden in the seventeenth century, which today are part of the museum visit itinerary.
