The Palazzo dei Priori is the oldest public palace in Tuscany. It was built starting from 1208 and finished in 1254. The building overlooks the most important square of the city, which takes its name from it. Even today it is the main seat of the Municipality of Volterra and inside there are many testimonies of the works of art and decorative elements that have been collected there by the Municipality over the centuries. In the Sala del Consiglio it is possible to admire a fresco from the end of the 14th century representing the Annunciation, which overlooks the table and chairs where the Mayor still holds the sessions of the Municipal Council today. Alongside a seventeenth-century painting depicts the Wedding at Cana, while the other walls are decorated with the coats of arms of the main Volterra families and the castles of its territory. The visit is completed by the climb to the Civic Tower, from which you can enjoy a splendid panorama.
