The Kunsthalle Wien is the central exhibition house in the city of Vienna for contemporary art. At its locations in the Museumsquartier and at Karlsplatz, it annually presents exhibitions as well as event and educational formats for a diverse audience. We commission new productions and collaborate with local and international artists and institutions to develop exhibitions and publications based on new research, thus providing a platform for artists. Through our work, we aim to provide a comprehensive space for exchange and discussion and to promote discourse on contemporary art in all its forms.
At the beginning of the history of Kunsthalle Wien was a temporary structure. Designed as a temporary building in container form by Adolf Krischanitz, Kunsthalle Wien was opened in 1992 at Karlsplatz. This initially controversial yellow container building not only shaped the Viennese cityscape but also transformed the local art and exhibition scene.
In May 2001, Kunsthalle Wien finally moved into its new main building in the Museumsquartier, designed by the architects Ortner & Ortner. The former Winter Riding Hall of the Hofstallungen was complemented by a functional new building that connects historical building substance with contemporary architecture. Two halls with different spatial profiles provide space for exhibitions of contemporary art.
At Karlsplatz, the yellow container was reduced to a glass pavilion in 2001. This glass cube, also designed by Adolf Krischanitz, is the second location of Kunsthalle Wien and, like the main house in the Museumsquartier, presents a dense program of exhibitions and events.
