From 11 February to 7 June 2026
The Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice announce the opening of the exhibition Tintoretto tells the Genesis. Research, analysis and restoration, set up from February 11 to June 7, 2026 and curated by Roberta Battaglia and Cristiana Sburlino. The exhibition project celebrates the return to the museum's galleries of the cycle with Stories of Genesis, created by Jacopo Tintoretto in the early fifties of the sixteenth century for the School of the Holy Trinity.
The exhibition brings together, for the first time since the dispersion of the cycle at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the three paintings belonging to the Gallerie dell'Accademia — The Creation of the Animals, The Original Sin and Cain Kills Abel — with the painting Adam and Eve before the Eternal, exceptionally loaned from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
The exhibition is the culmination of a long and skillful restoration intervention, carried out between February 2024 and January 2025 by the restorer Claudia Vittori on the occasion of the American exhibition Tintoretto’s Genesis, set up at the Cincinnati Art Museum from April 18 to September 1 2025. The intervention, made possible by the joint contribution of the Foundation for Italian Art & Culture in New York and the Cincinnati Art Museum, has freed the paintings from yellowed patinas and varnishes, restoring to them an extraordinary luminosity and revealing a natural landscape that for the first time in Tintoretto's production assumes a role of absolute protagonist.
The exhibition path, curated by Roberta Battaglia and Cristiana Sburlino with the set-up project and technical coordination of Maria Antonietta De Vivo, focuses on Tintoretto's painting technique emerging from the diagnostic campaign and the restoration intervention carried out. Through the results of the diagnostic campaign visitors can discover the secrets of the artist's working method: from the use of a single large textile support for the three paintings to the presence of underlying drawings made with charcoal and brush, to the compositional variations introduced during the work.
