From 20 April to 27 November 2022
Querini Stampalia Foundation , in collaboration with White Cube, invited the Danish-Vietnamese artist Danh Vo to curate, together with Chiara Bertola, head of the institution's contemporary art program, an exhibition project on the occasion of this year's Venice Biennale. . His works, together with those of the American sculptor of Japanese origins Isamu Noguchi and the Korean painter Park Seo-Bo , establish a complex dialogue between them within the spaces of this extraordinary building.
The history of the Querini Stampalia Foundation is also that of the noble Venetian family, the Querini, who lived in this building for generations, accumulating a vast collection of objects, books and works of art. This collection is made available to everyone with the foundation of the Foundation in 1869. The complex architectural layout opens up continuous windows on time. Each floor signals a new era in which the different moments in the history of the family and of the institution have been registered, superimposed or canceled. The space, bold and humble at the same time, is a labyrinthine experience that shows the redundancies, excesses, overlaps, with minimal or grandiose gestures, of the generations that have followed one another.
Who better than Danh Vo could cross that threshold? As an artist Vo is capable of germinating new life from the fog of memory and the weight of history. His work with objects and architectural spaces reveals a sensitivity towards time as an element connected with each of us. Vo constantly reuses his work, placing past projects in new environments and meanings and altering the visitor's perception. Vo's art, together with history, is inscribed within distinct spaces and cultures, creating a difficult dance with beauty and power.
