Situated in the renowned setting of Palazzo Franchetti (ACP Palazzo Franchetti), Breasts (Seno) the collective exhibition curated by Carolina Pasti, will make its debut during the opening of the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale from April 18 to November 24, 2024.
Breasts will showcase the works of over thirty emerging and established artists from around the world, spanning the fields of painting, sculpture, photography, and cinema from the 1500s to the present day. The works on display explore how the breast has been understood and represented in art across different cultures and traditions. Reflecting on a range of themes from motherhood to empowerment, from sexuality to body image and illness, the presentation investigates how the breast acts as a catalyst for discussing socio-political realities, challenging historical traditions, and expressing personal and collective identities. The mission is to promote awareness of breast cancer to a wider audience through the channel of art.
The exhibition is divided into five chapters arranged in the rooms of the mezzanine of the palace accessible through an engaging and site-specific entrance designed by Studio Buchanan. The first room examines the historical representation of the breast and the construction of narratives linked to the female body, highlighting how modern and contemporary artists have intervened in these entrenched preconceptions. The focus of this exploration is on the Masters of the Renaissance, specifically examining the iconography of the Madonna of the Milk. This iconic representation not only influenced Cindy Sherman's 'History Portraits', but also highlights how contemporary artists like Richard Dupont, Teniqua Clementine Crawford, and Sherrie Levine incorporate Renaissance elements into their figurative paintings. A figurative painting by Giorgio de Chirico shows the artist's metaphysical period, drawn from ancient art and renowned masters of the past.
