From 29 July to 2 October 2022
In the House Museum there is the exhibition On the traces of the monastery, between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries : an interesting series of Lombard paintings from private collections belonging to the sixteenth-eighteenth centuries.
The exhibition, curated by the Conservator of the Casa Museum Anna Ranzi , is proposed on the occasion of the 445th anniversary of the closure of the monastery of Santa Maria, from whose renovation the current Villa Monastero derives.
The visitor is involved in the atmosphere that once characterized the rooms of the former monastery church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, whose original furnishings are now preserved in the parish church of San Giorgio and in the Chiesa delle Grazie in Varenna.
The motif that unites the paintings, all coming from private collections, is the theme of the Virgin, declined in a different way over the centuries examined, with a different iconography and different meanings. This subject is flanked by three works dedicated to the Judgment of Solomon and the Expulsion from the Temple, two of which have recently been donated to the Museum of Villa Monastero. The scope of execution is mostly Venetian and Lombard and testifies to the collecting preference for works of this origin.
