La Rocca di Umbertide center for contemporary art is located in the historic center of the city. The fortress was designed in 1374 and completed in 1389 by Angeluccio di Ceccolo known as Trucascio. The building consists of a square tower and three lower towers with thick walls, typical of medieval buildings of the time. La Rocca passed into the hands of many owners: from private and noble families to the papal state. In 1984 the Municipality of Umbertide bought the property which in the following years was restored and strengthened the consolidation. During the conservation works, important elements were found which made it possible to reconstruct the history of the building. For example, an ancient masonry staircase was discovered on the first floor and a trap door used as access to the basement. Today the Fortress is used as a center for contemporary art and houses a very rich collection. The first original nucleus of the collection was donated by the painter and gallery owner Giovanni Ciangottini and includes most of the works he created. La Rocca hosts temporary exhibitions on national and international artists on issues related to the artistic and cultural history of the city, in particular on ceramics.
