From 9 November to 9 February 2020
The eclectic Pelagio Palagi, designer, architect and painter, is the protagonist of the autumn exhibition of the Royal Museums "Pelagio Palagi in Turin. Memory and invention in the Royal Palace", which he explores from 9 November 2019 to 9 February 2020 in the Galleria Scoperte Sabauda the activity carried out by the Bolognese architect in Turin, from 1832, as "Painter in charge of the decoration of the Royal Palaces" for Carlo Alberto of Savoy.
The Royal Palace of Turin is par excellence the place where Palagi's art has reached its maximum expression: the architect rearranged the residence for the Savoy family, giving the structure a new and monumental appearance, aligned with the new needs linked to the great ambitions of the sovereign and to the court ceremonial. A work that today we could define as a restyling, also carried out thanks to the collaboration of a team of painters (Francesco Gonin, Carlo Bellosio), sculptors and plasterers (Giuseppe Gaggini, Francesco Somaini, Diego Marielloni), cabinetmakers (Gabriele Capello known as Moncalvo) , bronze workers (Colla and Odetti, Manfredini and Viscardi firms).
The heart of the exhibition are the thirty-one sheets of the Archiginnasio Library in Bologna placed in dialogue, where possible, with the works to which they refer. The exhibition itinerary begins on the second floor of the Galleria Sabauda, precisely from the Discovery Space. Alongside the design drawings relating to the Swiss Guard Hall and the main reception rooms, some works actually created and still preserved in the Royal Palace will also be set up.
