Thursday 27 May, the new exhibition in Project Room Nicola Lo Calzo opens to the public. Binidittu, an unpublished project by the artist Nicola Lo Calzo (Turin, 1979) who, through the story of the history and cultural heritage of San Benedetto il Moro, examines the relationship between the history of colonialism and contemporary cultural identity. Born to African slaves in the early sixteenth century in the surroundings of Messina, and then lived as a minor friar in Sicily until his death (1589), San Benedetto, known as Binidittu, was not only elected as protector of both Afro-descendants in Latin America both of the Palermitans, but it has also become an icon of redemption and emancipation worldwide. The exhibition, curated by Giangavino Pazzola, is divided into an exhibition itinerary divided into four chapters and, through thirty medium and large format images, retraces the main stages of Binidittu's biography: from the liberation from slavery to his death, from post-racist utopia at beatification. Lo Calzo's photographs are accompanied by an installation that includes archival materials and documentation relating to the construction process of the project. The exhibition inaugurates the cycle of exhibitions “Passengers. Tales from the new world ”, a project conceived by CAMERA with the aim of carrying out a multi-year survey focused on artists belonging to the so-called“ Generation Y ”- the so-called millennials born between the early 1980s and mid-1990s.
