The GAM is pleased to present, as part of the SECOND RESONANCE, an exhibition curated by Elena Volpato, dedicated to the films of Giosetta Fioroni, preserved in the Videoteca collection. It is the nineteenth appointment of the exhibition cycle through which the GAM is narrating the first season of Italian artist films and videos from the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century.
Giosetta Fioroni made four films - Couples, Game, Goffredo, and Female Solitude - all in 1967. For some years now, cinematic and television images had been emerging in her paintings, created with industrial silver enamels. They were appearances of light, fleeting impressions on the white screen of the canvas, mostly female faces, fixed and framed, or repeated several times, as if they were the luminous trace, with silver salts, of a sequence of frames.
The exhibition begins with one of those paintings, The TV Girl from 1964, preserved in the collections of GAM and part of the Experimental Museum of Eugenio Battisti. It is a profile of a woman, outlined in reserve in the silver background, arranging her hair with her hands. Fioroni's images always seem aware of being images of images, perpetually intent on scrutinizing themselves in some reflection, putting on makeup or combing their hair, posing for the camera or capturing someone's gaze.
The male and female figures that appear in the four films on display are not different. They are thin, bodyless, lacking in essence. The absence of sound amplifies the atmosphere of emptiness that empties them of meaning. They appear as characters unable to become people, except by sheer will of acting, so fragile as to constantly seek something that circumscribes them, that can affirm their form: the embrace of a partner, the frame of a mirror, a white screen against which to pose or even just a headdress that closes the features of the face in a line.
