After the great success of Robert Doisneau, from 25 February to 4 June 2023, CAMERA - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia in Turin is proposing another legend of 20th century photography: Eve Arnold, the American photographer who was able to tell the world with a "passionate personal approach", the only tool she considers indispensable for a photographer.
To understand its importance in the history of photography, it is sufficient to remember that Eve Arnold was the first woman, together with Inge Morath, to join the prestigious Magnum Photos agency in 1951. Determination, curiosity and, above all, the will to escape from any stereotype or easy categorization allowed her to produce an eclectic corpus of works: from portraits of the great stars of cinema and entertainment to investigative reportages where she tackled absolutely central themes and issues in the public debate of yesterday and today.
The exhibition, curated by Monica Poggi and created in collaboration with Magnum Photos, consists of about 170 images, many of which have never been exhibited until now, and presents the photographer's complete work starting from the first black and white shots of the New York from the 1950s to the last color works, done at the age of 85, at the turn of the century. The selected works deal with themes and issues such as racism in the United States, women's emancipation, the interaction between the different cultures of the world. Although his worldwide fame is undoubtedly linked to the numerous services on the sets of unforgettable films, where he portrayed the great stars of the period from Marlene Dietrich to Marilyn Monroe, from Joan Crawford to Orson Welles.
