The Historical Museum and the Park of Miramare Castle is a museum located near Trieste. The Castle enjoys a charming panoramic position; it is perched on the sea, on the tip of the Grignano promontory, about ten kilometers from the city and is surrounded by a lush park rich in precious botanical species, created in symbiosis with the residence. Built between 1856 and 1860 commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg to live there with his consort, Princess Charlotte of Belgium, the Castle offers a unique testimony of a luxurious noble residence preserved with its original interior furnishings. Designed by the Austrian engineer Carl Junker, the building features an eclectic style as professed by the architectural fashion of the time. The Mediterranean scents and the austere European forms recreate at Miramare an absolutely unique scenario also thanks to the presence of the sea, which dictates the blue color of the ground floor tapestries of the Castle and inspires names and furnishings of different environments. The museum has more than twenty-two rooms. The ground floor, originally intended for private apartments, has an intimate and familiar character, while the first floor, characterized by red tapestries with imperial symbols, was the representation floor, aimed at celebrating the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty and reserved for illustrious guests.
The Miramare Park, with its twenty-two hectares of surface, is the result of the challenging intervention carried out over many years by Maximilian of Habsburg on the karst promontory of Grignano, originally almost completely devoid of vegetation. For the design, Maximilian relied on the work of Carl Junker and the Bohemian gardener Anton Jelinek; large quantities of fertile soil and numerous varieties of tree and shrub species were imported, many of which were of non-European origin. The works were constantly monitored by Maximilian even after his transfer to Mexico, from where he sent a large number of plants. The Park, which in the intentions of the client was to be an experimental station for reforestation and acclimatization of rare botanical species, is a complex natural and artificial ensemble, where it is still possible today to breathe a unique atmosphere, imbued with meanings closely related to the relationship between man and nature that was typical of the time. Exhibitions The Castle and the former Stables regularly host exhibitions and cultural activities inside.
