The exhibition Our Wonderful Country! Italian holidays at the Salce Collection, curated by Elisabetta Pasqualin, is a journey through the most attractive tourist locations in our country, illustrated by the collection's advertising posters. Fascinating destinations, rich in art and history, natural beauty, places to spend unforgettable holidays.
How can you remain indifferent to the exotic charm of Capri, the ancient magic of Pompeii (perhaps visiting it at night), the eternal spring of Naples, the sea and sky of Sicily, the sun of the Adriatic coast?
During the 1900s, Italy emerged as a tourist destination par excellence. In the idea of stay and holiday there is above all the concepts of fun and distraction, far from commitment and everyday life. The way of conceiving travel is changing, no longer just elitist. Tourism of the late 19th and early 20th centuries is clearly the heir to the tradition of the Grand Tour, the "cultural journey" that young nobles and upper middle class people from all over Europe took for their education, visiting classic destinations and culture. Subsequently, thanks to the development of means of transport, first of all the train, tourism, even in Italy, received a notable boost, becoming accessible to all after the Second World War. It is the moment that sees the transformation of tourism from an elite phenomenon to a mass phenomenon.
