From March 6 to June 2, 2025, the Autonomous Institute Villa Adriana and Villa d'Este - VILLÆ in Tivoli hosts the exhibition The Dream of Anio by Giusy Pirrotta, whose sculptures and installations investigate the boundary between real and fantastic, emphasizing the seductive and repulsive dimension of women. The exhibition of the five works, some unpublished, at the DEPOT - Contemporary Art Deposit of the Sanctuary of Hercules Victor, is curated by Andrea Bruciati, Director of the Institute and is born as a recontextualization of the solo exhibition by Giusy Pirrotta titled Dreams, presented in 2024 at the MEF - Ettore Fico Museum in Turin. The exhibition in Tivoli takes its title from the evocation of the myth of the Etruscan king Anio - a figure to whom the river Aniene traditionally owes its name - and on display is the glazed ceramic work titled Loose Head, Anio, created by the artist for the occasion.Alongside, exhibited are the works from the latest research period of Giusy Pirrotta on the iconography of the feminine monstrous in history, mythology, and literature up to the present day: among these Arachne, a sculptural group where the metamorphosis of the protagonist of the myth becomes a metaphor for the transgression of limits; Artemis of Ephesus, Breasts Universe, a totemic composition linked to the artist's autobiographical experience exploring the isolation of women, confined to the roles of mother and midwife; Cybele, the Latin magna Mater, the sculpture of the goddess with explicit references to the physical and sexual sphere; finally, the work Crying Head and candelabra that reinterprets the symbolic iconography of alchemical hands, as a mysterious generative element capable of shaping matter and spirit.Regarding the female gender, the wild aspects, magical qualities, the ability to generate life and death have been considered over the centuries as elements to control and contain. Giusy Pirrotta challenges with her art the vision of an empathetic and submissive femininity, prompting the viewer to reflect on how deeply historical developments have shaped the perception of women in society, influencing power dynamics and gender relations.
