Archaeological Park of Tindari

Via del Teatro Greco Tindari, Sicily

The Archaeological Park of Tindari is located in the municipality of Patti, in the province of Messina in Sicily. The locality is also known by the names of Tindaride, Tindarida and Tindario of Greek and Roman origin. The ancient city included the acropolis, a wall that surrounded it for over 3 km, the Basilica, the Theater, the domus, the public baths and a series of parallel streets that intersect with narrower streets and the Decumanus. The Basilica and the Theater are the political and cultural center of the Roman city. Today they are partially preserved, thanks to the latest restorations carried out. Of the theater only the cavea layout and the section of the three-tiered stage building remain. Walking through the streets of the ancient city you come across the famous "Domus", or the ancient aristocratic houses. The plans of the Domus are still visible today and have floor mosaics, columns with Corinthian - Italic terracotta capitals and Doric columns. The Archaeological Park hosts the famous public baths of the imperial age. The black and white mosaics and the rooms with the cold and hot water tubs are preserved. The tour ends with a small antiquarium which groups, in five rooms, a selection of artifacts found during the excavation campaigns and arranged chronologically. The collection includes: bronze objects, Latin inscriptions, terracotta vases, glass, marble sculptures and architectural decorations.
