From 16 June to 30 October 2023
“Medea. Between archeology and myth" is the exhibition that will be inaugurated on Friday 16 June at 5.30 pm in the central hall of the "Paolo Orsi" regional archaeological museum in Syracuse. The exhibition is organized by the "Archaeological and landscape park of Syracuse, Eloro, Villa del Tellaro and Akrai" in collaboration with the Inda foundation.
“Medea”, Euripides' tragedy staged this year on the occasion of the 58th cycle of classical performances at the Greek theater of Syracuse, represents one of the best-known, but also richest and most complex, Greek myths, which sees Medea as the fascinating and complex protagonist: sorceress, priestess, wife, lover, betrayed woman, but also mother who commits the most heinous of crimes, the killing of her children. Together with her there are numerous figures linked to her story and that of the Argonauts, narrated to the eyes of visitors through the very effective language of the images that the finds show, all embellished by the stage costumes loaned from the Inda historical archive.
«This initiative – underlines the regional councilor for cultural heritage and Sicilian identity, Francesco Paolo Scarpinato – is the trait d'union between two great heritages: that of the classical representations staged every year in the Aretusea city and the historical finds preserved in our museums. An event that will allow visitors to immerse themselves in Greek culture, through the story of this great protagonist, between the theatrical world and archaeological evidence that has contributed to passing the myth down to the present day."
The exhibition is divided into several sections and will tell the various episodes of the myth of the princess of Colchis through the finds not only preserved in the "Paolo Orsi" but also coming from other important Sicilian and state museum institutions thanks to a collaboration which is the good practice of those who work to enhance cultural heritage. The exhibition is a positive example of synergy between the regional museums of Agrigento, Gela, Lipari and the national ones of Naples, Rome and Palazzo Jatta in Ruvo di Puglia.
The exhibition will remain open until October 30th with free entry, observing the museum's opening hours.
