The Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens is a museum in the city of Sunderland, England. Founded in 1846, it has a collection considered to be of international importance, and the only known British example of a gliding reptile is preserved here. The winter gardens, attached to the museum, contain over 2,000 flowers and plants. In 2003, the Museum was recognized as the busiest outside of London. The Museum contains a large collection of locally produced Sunderland Lustreware pottery. Other noteworthy objects in the Museum are a stuffed lion purchased in 1879, the remains of a walrus brought back from Siberia in the 1800s and the first Nissan car produced in Sunderland. Also present are the remains of a human skeleton and a dinosaur bone that was found in the area. The library moved in 1995 to the new City Library and Arts Center on Fawcett Street (which occupies part of the former Binns Department Store).
