In the center of Stockholm there is a truly interesting place for those who love economic history and the mysteries of ancient coins. It is the Ekonomiska Museet, also known as the Royal Coin Cabinet. The history of this museum dates back to 1572 with a private collection of ancient Swedish coins. Over time, thanks also to contributions from the royals, the collection has grown to become one of the most important in the world. In 1996, the museum found its home at Slottsbacken, in the heart of Stockholm's Old Town, before moving in 2019 to the Swedish History Museum. Among the highlights are the oldest Swedish coin and a copper plate coin from the reign of Queen Christina of 1644, considered the heaviest in the world. Additionally, the museum houses parts of the Lohe treasure, discovered in 1937 in Gamla Stan. But that's not all: the museum also has a unique collection of Nobel Prize medals, making it a fascinating place for history and numismatics enthusiasts.
