Photography is a medium profoundly influenced by technological development. The period between the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s marked a strong acceleration from a technical point of view, first with the spread of computers and the internet and then of the digital medium. But they are also years during which we had to deal on the one hand with the cultural legacy of Luigi Ghirri - who passed away in 1992 - and on the other with experiences of practice and research across borders, which began as early as the end of the 1980s.

The exhibition “The language of images” is dedicated to this period and to the most significant artists. Photography in Italy between the 80s and 90s” edited by Marcella Manni and promoted by Municipality of Soliera and from Campori Foundation, committed to investigating the expressive forms of contemporaneity. The exhibition, set up at the Campori Castle in Soliera (MO) , can be visited free of charge from Saturday 7 October 2023 to Sunday 7 January 2024 .

Experimentation, identification of a personal language, political militancy and activism: the artistic research of those years retains the never-exhausted drive of conceptual experiences and anticipates, using technological evolutions, much of current research, especially on a theoretical level. The human figure and landscape remain the subjects of representation, the notion of objectivity now leaves room for that of experience and distance towards the descriptive use of photography, for a functional and not merely displayed use of technical skills. Each artist interprets the research in a coherent and personal way: the juxtaposition of the works on display - free from a chronological criterion - allows us to read this passage from different points of view.
