Museum of the New Lands

The Terre Nuove Museum is located in the town of San Giovanni Valdarno, near Florence. The name "Terre Nuove" derives from the phenomenon of discovery and enrichment of Tuscany during the Late Middle Ages. In fact, the inhabitants of the city bought plots of land and built their homes there to extend control over the territory. The Museum is located inside the Palazzo di San Giovanni which is also of medieval origin. The Palazzo di San Giovanni, like all the buildings of the newly founded centers, was built with specific political and control purposes between the end of 1200 and the beginning of 1300. The Museum houses a rich collection that traces the history of medieval Tuscany from urban and artistic point of view. Today the Museum is very active in teaching and offers workshops and guided tours for families and schools. In fact, the Museum has recently promoted video lessons with the aim of bringing children and young people closer to the history and art of the Valdarno area.
