Since July 1st, the museum section The Last Fascism 1943-1945. The Italian Social Republic is open to visitors, a new exhibition at the MuSa - Museum of Salò. A completely renovated exhibition that addresses the main historical aspects of the 600 days of the Italian Social Republic, wanted by the Municipality of Salò and the Foundation Opera pia e Carità laicale and Istituto Lodroniano, with the support of the Lombardy Region. The section is structured in two environments. The first illustrates the background, that is, the period from the fall of Mussolini (July 25, 1943) to the rise of the so-called Republic of Salò (September 18, 1943): in this space, the dramatic and tumultuous events leading first to the decision of the Grand Council of Fascism to dismiss the leader, and then to Mussolini's announcement from Radio Monaco of the birth of a new fascist state are presented. The second part of the exhibition systematically addresses the story of the Italian Social Republic from its establishment to its fall. Through period objects and multimedia reconstructions, the characteristics of the new republican state that settled on the shores of Lake Garda are illustrated: from the conscript army to the volunteer militias, from socialization to racial persecution, from the roundups of partisans to the massacres of "rebels" and civilians. A spotlight is then shone on the ordeal suffered by Italians in these six hundred days: bombings, mourning, evacuations, hunger, black market. The last part of the exhibition addresses the legacy of the Italian Social Republic in the First Republic: a myth for the nostalgics, an anti-myth for the democrats.
