From 2 July to 3 April 2022
The Toilet Paper and Martin Parr exhibition at Villa Medici in Rome brings together for the first time the British photographer Martin Parr and the two creators of the TOILETPAPER magazine, Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari , for a hypnotic itinerary in the heart of a visual repertoire overflowing with colors. The exhibition itinerary is presented in the form of an installation of over forty photographs that occupies a part of the Renaissance gardens of Villa Medici and offers a space to move around independently according to the installation designed by Alice Grégoire and Clément Périssé, architects and fellows of the 'French Academy in Rome.
The exhibition originates from the collaboration between Martin Parr, Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari for the book ToiletMartin PaperParr published in 2020 by Damiani which collects and juxtaposes, side by side, the most iconic images of the prolific archives of these three artists. The human body, food, animals are the recurring motifs of this photographic project that questions our contemporary obsession with images. From the small format to the monumental prints, the photographs exhibited at Villa Medici marry the landscape in a game of relationships that underlines the biting and impertinent spirit of their authors.
What better setting than the gardens of a Renaissance palace to renew the exercise of delightful contrasts? Meticulously composed images and scenes captured from everyday life interact to give life to a photographic narrative in which the vernacular and the surrealist fiction (con) merge in the Toilet Paper and Martin Parr exhibition at Villa Medici in Rome.
