Thanks to the enhancement project Depositi (re)discovered, the journey continues in the deposits of the National Roman Museum which reveals its extraordinary finds, making a cultural heritage accessible

unexpected. Starting from 14 January until 19 February 2023, the second stage of the exhibition cycle which, under the guidance of Ulysses, leads to the discovery of the "others": other peoples, other worlds, other cultures.

From the journey of a single hero, we move on to that of an entire people, the Romans, and their ability to deal with defeated, subjugated but above all different populations, from barbarians to tiny pygmies, from exotic animals to imaginative representations, the path enters the representations of distant places and peoples.

Exhibited in Hall XI bis of the Baths of Diocletian, the works depict barbarians with bizarre hairstyles (such as the Head of a Syriac priest and the Portrait with an elephant-shaped headdress); men and women belonging to subject populations (such as the Head of a young African, the colossal Head of Dace and the Sarcophagus with scenes of prisoners); scenes of daily life belonging to distant lands (such as the representation of the Mosaic with a fight between a pygmy and a crane and the Sarcophagus with Nilotic scenes): a reflection on the way in which the ancients perceived and represented different populations, between stereotypes, mistrust and curiosity .
