The show

The "Noses for Art" exhibition curated by Joanna De Vos and Melania Rossi arrives at Palazzo Merulana.

The exhibition finds its roots in the encounter between two independent curators, Joanna De Vos and Melania Rossi, respectively of Belgian origin, the second of Italian origins. The title of the exhibition corresponds to a life dedicated to art, comparing the history of art in Belgium and Italy on an aesthetic and conceptual level, finding unexpected similarities and specific differences.

The exhibition project is in perfect harmony with the Elena and Claudio Cerasi collection, put together over years of passion and love for art, without strict rules but also discovering lesser-known artists of the past, sometimes instead finding rare works by famous artists alongside contemporary authors.

In this non-linear path, where instinct and a "nose for art" are the driving force, the "Noses for art" project follows this same dynamic.

First, the presentation proposes an intriguing dialogue between Italian and Belgian art at the beginning of the 20th century. The permanent collection mainly includes pictorial and sculptural works from the 1920s to the 1940s, with significant contemporary acquisitions.

A selection of Belgian works from the same period, loaned by as many Belgian private collectors and some institutions, is presented in dialogue with the permanent collection of Palazzo Merulana.

The second path of the exhibition presents nine contemporary Belgian and nine Italian artists whose works celebrate, challenge and invite reflection on the nose, the senses and art. Historically, the nose is considered a sign of character, status, beauty. Being the most instinctive sense, smell guides us through life, towards pleasure and danger, and has the power to revive memories. But Noses for art doesn't just talk about noses as organs or forms. This is the metaphor that this oldest organ, the first to form in the womb, can represent.

It's about how Italians and Belgians share a nose for art, how two noses of two curators move in the same direction, and how artists follow their nose, their "nose".
