From 23 October to 28 October 2019
On the occasion of Rome Art Week 2019 , the week of contemporary art in Rome, Palazzo Merulana presents "Girls", a solo exhibition by Lucianella Cafagna, curated by Marco Di Capua.
The exhibition is part of the program of the 14th edition of the Rome Film Fest.
"Girls" is an anthology by Lucianella Cafagna. The Roman artist has been working on the theme of adolescence for twenty years, focusing in particular on the archetypal figure of the girl-nymph, in the history of art as well as in the psychology of depth.
Its characteristics of ambiguity, the being between the human and the divine, make the nymph a being that escapes the constraints and stereotypes in which one continually tries to close it, but also the symbol of that mysterious beauty full of pathos that is of the transient.
Nymph like the cherry blossom, incarnation of that mono no aware, of that sense of nostalgia, which introduces the depth of time, the poignant sense of its loneliness into the feeling of beauty.
Cafagna wants to celebrate this figure in its contemporary declination, dedicating its work to all the brave new Antigoni who have appeared on the scene for some years.
Indeed, Antigone has always been considered the symbol of the struggle against power, of the solitary and romantic rebellion against the injustice of a tyrant.
“From Pussy Riot to the girl who reads the constitution in front of the Russian army, from Malala to Eddi the guerrilla who went to defend the Kurdish experiment from the fundamentalists, from Greta, to the girl who lived in the trees, to all the“ captains ”. He is a totally new and hopeful figure, ”explains Cafagna.
Lucianella Cafagna was born in Rome in 1968. She studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and spent an apprenticeship in the studio of Pierre Carron, a pupil of Balthus, an experience that ended with a group show at the Grand Palais. In 2011, she participated in the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in the Italian Pavilion and in 2014 she has an entry in her name in the Treccani Encyclopedia, where she is counted among the twenty most relevant contemporary artists on the Italian scene. His work was affiliated with the Magical Realism of the Roman School. It is represented in Rome by the contemporary art gallery RvB Arts.
