The Nicola Del Roscio Foundation presents from Thursday, September 19th to Friday, October 18th, 2024, Transcending Blue, the exhibition of the American artist Barbara Crawford (Lexington, Virginia, United States) specially conceived for the spaces of the Foundation. Transcending Blue is inspired by the life of Cy Twombly, with his continuous movements between Lexington and Rome, and consists of two works: Long Wall Panel and Pyramids.
The pyramidal installation by Barbara Crawford reflects the "transfiguration" that Cy Twombly experienced throughout his life, between Lexington and Rome, and is directly connected to the painting Blue Ridge Mountains Transfixed by a Roman Piazza (see illustration), of which there are two almost identical versions. Created in Rome in 1962, the painting shows a trapezoidal shape drawn in graphite pencil, covered on the sides with bulges of oil paint and wax pastel, wildly gestural. The composition includes the inscription of the title, giving the overall impression of a square drawn with elongated stone blocks, cutting a valley depression between two hills with lush and extensive vegetation waterfalls. In this work, Cy Twombly does not limit himself to dealing with his own biographical and geographical "transfiguration" between Lexington and Rome: The painting also thematizes the contrasts between the "New" and the "Old World", between the birthplace and the country of adoption, between the American and the Italian, but also between the countryside and the city, between nature and architecture, between the present and antiquity. The spatial perspective geometry of the central motif (rather unusual for Twombly) and its contrast with the exuberant wild growth reflect the energetic tension between linear pencil drawing and gestural-expressive color painting - and at the same time are the two main means of artistic expression of Cy Twombly - and therefore between the contrasting paradigmatic concepts of drawing and color.
