The show

Antoni Tàpies, Robert Rauschenberg, Bruce Nauman, Eduardo Chillida, Tony Cragg, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Richard Tuttle, Cristina Iglesias, Eulalia Valldosera. They are some of the protagonists of A L NORTE DE LA TORMENTA. From Robert Rauschenberg to Juan Muñoz, The masterpieces of the IVAM collection in Valencia, curated by Hou Hanru with Chiara Bertini, at the MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts from 22 May to 8 September 2019. The exhibition is part of Expanding The Horizon , the MAXXI program dedicated to the development of a network of international collaborations between the museum and other cultural institutions, public and private collections. On this occasion, some historical masterpieces of Spanish and international art from the collection of IVAM, Institut Valencià d'Art Modern , one of the most important contemporary art museums in Spain, are exhibited at the MAXXI. In 2020, a focus on the MAXXI collection will be hosted in the rooms of the IVAM. The IVAM collection, since its foundation in 1985, has collected over time an enviable artistic heritage that combines modern and contemporary art, global and local, from different geographies and cultural contexts: Spanish, European, Latin American, North American.
The exhibition takes its name from a 1986 work by the famous Spanish artist Juan Muñoz, Al norte de la tormenta. Enigmatic and unusual, this large circular iron sculpture resembles an astrolabe, from which, however, knives, doors, railings and other elements typical of the Madrid artist's early research emerge. The result is an alienating effect, a mysterious universe in which all things are intertwined in a "storm" of ideas and thoughts. The work welcomes the public, together with another sculpture by Juan Muñoz , Untitled (1998), from the MAXXI Collection, to underline the dialogue between the two institutions. This second bronze sculpture represents a smiling figure with an Asian physiognomy, which seems almost intent on seeking a dialogue and interaction with the viewer. The exhibition accords with one of the central narrative lines in Muñoz's work, according to which the public must be accompanied and transported, through his works, into an illusory and visionary world, where the distinction between reality and fiction is ambiguous and often indefinable. The works were selected inspired by the tension, peculiar to a certain Spanish culture, between a more open, luminous, ironic dimension and another more intimate, mysterious, dark. The use of waste objects assembled in the two sculptures Float by Tony Cragg and Blood Orange Summer Glut by Robert Rauschenberg recalls a fragmentary, paradoxical and playful imaginary, while in the splendid canvases of the Spanish artist Antoni Tàpies , La ligne rouge (Negre amblínia vermella ) and Gran diptic roig i negre , the matter seems to spring from an explosive big bang. Of great evocative power are the terracotta sculptures of the Basque artist Eduardo Chillida , Lurra G 139, Lurra G 215, Lurra G 217 and Oxido G 269 as well as Model for tunnels , by Bruce Nauman , which simulates an empty tunnel, suggesting a state of indefiniteness aimed at showing the process more than the finished work.
There´s no reason a good man is hard to find I by Richard Tuttle rises like a spiral from the ground upwards, arousing a sense of wonder, while the large iron and concrete sculpture by Cristina Iglesias , Untitled , seems wanting to invite the viewer to enter the work to find themselves in a dream world, in contrast with the imposing dimensions. In the two photographs by Eulalia Valdossera , which are part of the El melic del món / The navel of the world series, countless cigarette butts are meticulously positioned by the artist; Absorto by Pedro Cabrita Reis , made with wood and industrial materials, is an enigmatic circular construction that goes beyond the visual to reach a contemplative and spiritual dimension. Collections of 60 drawings n.7 by Allan McCollum is made up of sixty drawings of abstract shapes, unique pieces that seem to be mass-produced, but which in reality are distinguished by minimal and at first glance imperceptible variations. The Valencian artist Ángeles Marco is present in the exhibition with the work Escalera mecánica , a truncated iron staircase that rises towards nowhere generating a sense of vertigo, while the series of 101 photographic portraits by Hans-Peter Feldmann 100 years , is a reflection on the passage of time through black and white shots of people aged between a few months and, in fact, a hundred years old. Sweets , by Susana Solano is a sculpture in iron, lead and glass, reminiscent of a large candy box and which, through irony and familiar shapes, evokes memories from a long time ago. And again, the sound sculpture Ostinato Blanco-Azul by Josè Antonio Orts , which comes alive as the public passes by; Miquel Navarro , who in his works connects the relationship between architecture and the human body; the series of photographs by Manolo Laguillo , which meticulously reproduces the municipality of Gandìa and the shots by Miguel Trillo , who immortalized the vitality of young adolescents on the streets of Lisbon, Havana, Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Almeria, Los Angeles , Tangier and Manila. Also on display are some works from the MAXXI Collection, such as Entrando , by Juan Uslé , a canvas in which the purity of geometric shapes is combined with strong and decisive colors, and Dolmen II , Allegretto by Jorge Peris , acquired thanks to the contribution of the Friends of MAXXI .
