On the occasion of the opening of the Cerruti Collection to the public, the Castello di Rivoli is starting a program of presentation of contemporary works of art in homage to this extraordinary collection. The first chapter of this series opens with works by Anna Boghiguian, Camille Henrot, Liu Ding, Giulio Paolini, Giuseppe Penone, Susan Philipsz and Seth Price. Other artists will present their works in subsequent chapters, in an organic way and in a dialogue between different times and places.
Housed in the external atrium and on the first floor of the Castello di Rivoli, but also in the garden of the villa that houses the Cerruti Collection, the works of this first chapter are inspired in their heterogeneity by the masterpieces of the past collected by Francesco Federico Cerruti , at architecture of the villa and the biography of this reserved entrepreneur and collector.
Cerruti's passion for books and bindings leads us to reflect on the historical origins and potential of a story entrusted to surfaces, rolled, folded, tied or put "in contact" with each other: of leather (parchment) and paper in the modern book . Three new leporelli created by Anna Boghiguian combine writing, painting and collage to create a unique story, between past, present and future. Giuseppe Penone has chosen to exhibit an unpublished work from his collection: a delicate frottage of the cover of the first edition of Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. For the artist, the book preserves the poet's vitality and, touching and tracing its surface, it repeats the tactile experience. Seth Price 's photo collages also talk about the relationship between narration, subjectivity and surface - from the point of view of our digital age.
The eclecticism of Villa Cerruti, the contrast between the splendor of the collection and the withdrawn life of its owner give rise to sudden and fascinating associations: between domestic interior and spiritual refuge; between the impulse to collect and the sacredness of exchanging or returning a gift. The work of Camille Henrot focuses on this last dichotomy: a sculpture that is both a house and a piggy bank, but also a precious gift-talisman. After visiting Villa Cerruti, artist Liu Ding created a new installation specifically for the Castello di Rivoli: an “orchid room” where praise of beauty and everyday life alternate in a game of mirrors. Acquired by Cerruti and sometimes kept in the offices of his bindery, the work of Giulio Paolini is dedicated to the essay L'arte e la spazio by the philosopher Martin Heidegger and joins for the occasion the works of the artist which are part of the collection of Rivoli Castle.
Finally, a new sound installation by Susan Philipsz, inspired by the sound of the wind, awaits visitors in the entrance hall of the Castle and in the garden of the villa, linking the contemporary art museum and the house in an echo of sound vibrations. -museum.
A project conceived by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, with the curatorial coordination of S a ra Catenacci and production assistance by Elena D'Angelo.
