Giovane Fotografia Italiana is a project of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia dedicated to the discovery and enhancement of emerging photography talents in Italy. Now in its tenth edition in 2023, the format includes a free open call – aimed at artists under 35 – which invites them to present a photographic series in line with the concept of the edition. At the heart of the project is an approach to photography dedicated to artistic research.
An international commission selects the projects which, thanks to a financial contribution intended for the artists, are produced and exhibited in a collective exhibition in the European Photography program in Reggio Emilia.
Starting from 2018, each edition also sees the awarding of the Young Italian Photography Award, a cash award given to the artist considered to be the best among the seven finalists. From 2012 to today, an archive of over seventy female and male photographers has been built up who have participated in Giovane Fotografia Italiana over the years. Thanks to the collaboration with the Archivio Eredi di Luigi Ghirri, the award for Young Italian Photography from 2022 is named after Luigi Ghirri.
The theme of the tenth edition of Giovane Fotografia Italiana | Luigi Ghirri Award 2023 is Belonging. The sense of belonging is a fundamental need of human beings, however many phenomena over the last generation (from the digital revolution and telecommunications to migrations, up to the progress of science) have called into question the social and relational structures to which we belonged get used to it. Today the tension between different ways of understanding belonging is more evident than ever: on the one hand, inclusion in a community with an already defined identity, which depending on the context can be a form of oppression or resistance; on the other hand, a libertarian drive to adhere to new forms of community based on value choices: from micro-communities to the construction of larger cultural areas - such as Europe itself -, up to new global concepts such as belonging to species or the holistic one to Nature; without counting the relationships of belonging that affect the most intimate sphere.
