The Cole Museum of Zoology is a museum that is part of the University of Reading. The museum was founded by Professor Francis Cole, from whom it takes its name, in 1906. The Cole Museum of Zoology houses a variety of animal finds so as to be a reference point for teaching zoology and comparative anatomy. Inside the museum there are thousands of specimens of great zoological importance: taxidermy, skeletons, histological preparations, dissections preserved in fluid, fossil material, casts and some superb models of developmental stages and extinct animals. The exhibits that stand out in the collection are a complete elephant skeleton, the hanging skeleton of a false killer whale. The museum also includes the complete skeleton of a reticulated python with over 400 vertebrae, the remains of a pair of giant spider crabs, and a fossil of the largest spider that ever lived. The museum displays are arranged in taxonomic order so that visits follow a certain itinerary and take less than an hour to complete.
