The Civic Museum of Ancient Art is located in the historic center of Pistoia and is part of the Civic Museums. The museum is located inside the fourteenth-century Palazzo degli Anziani. The Museum is the city's first museum institution, founded at the end of the nineteenth century and opened in 1922. The museum collection includes more than 300 works including paintings, sculptures and objects of applied arts such as goldsmiths, glass and ceramics. The collection re-elaborates the artistic history of Pistoia from 1100 to 1900 from a historical, religious, architectural and urbanistic point of view. The works on display, mostly related to Florentine and Pistoian painting, testify to the artistic culture between the city of Florence and the city of Pistoia. In particular, the paintings of the fourteenth and sixteenth century schools are of great importance. A well-stocked nucleus is certainly that of 17th and 18th century Florentine painting. The top floor of the Museum houses the Puccini collection which merged into the exhibition spaces in 1914. Finally, the mezzanine houses the Giovanni Michelucci Documentation Center dedicated to the Pistoian architect. Educational workshops, educational activities and conferences are held here.
