From 12 October to 27 January 2024
TANZ AUF DEM VULKAN is the new exhibition of the Morra Greco Foundation, an exhibition project that brings together a selection of works of painting, sculpture, installation, photography and video from the Morra Greco collection. The works on display interrogate the legacy of modernism through a critical reading of society and individual life in late capitalism.
The title refers to a 1938 German musical inspired by a phrase uttered by the then German Foreign Minister, Gustav Stresemann, who characterized German society in the midst of turbulent change as "dancing on a volcano." The title was later revived for a 1998 documentary film, Berlin Techno Sex: Tanz auf dem Vulkan, which focused on the Berlin gay scene set within the framework of the musical subculture of techno, the world of clubbing, and a scenario of escape and liberation which more generally characterized the spirit of the early 2000s and the post-fall of the Berlin Wall.
Photographing a cross-section of the Morra Greco collection for the second year in a row, the exhibition traces a path through international art from the early 2000s to the present day, highlighting in particular the connection of the collection with Central European and German art.
