The exhibition, produced by the Modena Visual Arts Foundation and curated by Chiara Dall'Olio, offers a series of video and photographic installations by the Israeli artist , whose work, intertwining reality and fiction, revolves around the themes of identity, ritual , of the nation-state.
In Modena, from 15 November 2019 to 13 April 2020 in the Sala Grande and in the Upper Rooms of the FMAV headquarters - Palazzo Santa Margherita, Fondazione Modena Arti Visive presents the solo exhibition of the Israeli artist Yael Bartana (Kfar Yehezkel, 1970), who currently lives and works between Amsterdam and Berlin.
The exhibition, curated by Chiara Dall'Olio, presents six video and photographic installations , which address different declinations of the concepts of "identity", "nation-state" and "ritual" , and the exploitation of these terms in today's political scene .
While Italy and Europe are facing nationalist tensions and new separatist pressures, the artist intends to draw attention to the existence of predominant social and political mechanisms, encouraging the public to question their position with respect to these systems.
"Starting from the documentary style of her first works - says Chiara Dall'Olio - Yael Bartana then moved on in the second half of the 2000s to create actions, collective rituals, stories, which despite being plausible, are actually filmic fictions, at the same time widening a look at the European world, in which he lives today ".
"The ambiguity present in these video installations - continues the curator - is that of the border between reality and fiction, but it is also the mixture between a documentary style and a shooting method taken from the Zionist propaganda films of the 1920s and 1930s, with moments that can be almost ironic, up to the latest works that take a refined and minimalist aesthetic to the extreme, but at the same time full of stratifications of meanings and symbols ".
