For the third appointment of 2023, Spazio Leonardo is pleased to present Upside/Down , a solo exhibition by Gabriella Ciancimino (1978, Palermo), an artist who carries out research based on relationships and on a conception of the work of art as a moment of meeting/confrontation between individuals. Upside/Down brings together a corpus of works created between 2020 and 2023 and is conceived as a journey that winds along the walls of the "open world" of Spazio Leonardo.

For the long wall of the gallery , Gabriella designs a wall painting, the leitmotif of her artistic practice, which suggests looking at the world "upside down", to change the point of view on things and awaken consciences, like children who with a still fresh gaze they explore the world. Thus, symbolically upside down, in the wall drawing the artist explores an underground landscape made of plots that seem to suggest new physical landscapes and emotional scenarios undertaken within the ground, in which newly born roots are found from planted seeds.

Jagged lines, sometimes sharp, sometimes rounded, convey an almost lunar atmosphere and symbolize the breaking of linear time on which history is based, in which past, present and future become only a convention to mark time. The wall drawing, therefore, appears like a timeless page and acts as a backdrop to paper drawings that appear as pop-up windows from which to glimpse images of worlds lost or yet to be explored, but within which complete shapes and well-known iconographies can be glimpsed .

The wall works made with woven papers recall both the technique used by nomadic peoples to create carpets inside their tents and the pixel grids of digital images. The artist intervenes on these interweavings with images taken from Renaissance Iconology, botanical references, ancient plants or plants from remote countries and poetic compositions conceived by her, in search of new visions to share with the public.
