The collective exhibition that introduced Korean Minhwa painting to Milan, perhaps the most beloved of the festival for the peculiarity of its lively and captivating language, returns to the Matalon Foundation. After the success of 2017 and 2018, the rooms of Foro Buonaparte come back to life with characters and animals from a painting of our days but coming from a very distant tradition, updated and reworked according to the sensitivity of the living artists.When we talk about Minhwa, we mean a characteristic manifestation of the entire Korean culture that involves popular art in terms of form, recognizable for style and subjects, established in the 17th century.Minhwa painting, since its origins, represents, on paper or silk, animals and figures of mythology, scenes of daily life, and objects as symbols of happiness and well-being. Its artists were itinerant in worship areas, often for local festivals, where they stopped to carry out commissioned works, commissioned by nobles or common people. Unfortunately, the Korean War (1950) decreed the decline of this tradition.The Minhwa revival developed in South Korea from the 1980s of the 20th century. In the democratic country, efforts are made not to disperse an important historical-artistic heritage, updating and adding new subjects, while maintaining an identity style. A characteristic manifestation of the culture of the entire Korea, in the Republic of the South, the action of artistic associations such as the Korean Minhwa Association is decisive, the protagonist of this exhibition. They are born to unite and represent painters who recognize themselves in a true and proper movement dedicated to the rebirth of the Minhwa genre in contemporary times. Some of their leaders and a representation of the monthly magazine Wol-Gan Minhwa will be present.
