From the 7th of March to the 4th of May 2025, the Palazzo Reale in Milan hosts for the first time in the world the exhibition FROM CINDY SHERMAN TO FRANCESCO VEZZOLI. 80 CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS, with 150 works by 80 great contemporary artists from around the world. Promoted by the Municipality of Milan - Culture, by Palazzo Reale and by the Giuseppe Iannaccone Foundation, with the executive production of Arthemisia, the exhibition is curated by Daniele Fenaroli with the scientific consultancy of Vincenzo de Bellis, and represents a unique opportunity to explore contemporary themes through the perspective of internationally renowned artists. Set up in 11 rooms, located on the ground floor of Palazzo Reale, the exhibition dedicates the opening space to Cindy Sherman, an emblematic artist, whose 6 works immediately reflect on female identity, the body and its free availability, introducing us to a path where crucial themes - from gender identity to those related to culture or belonging traditions - are investigated and represented according to the sensitivity of each artist present. Following artists such as Nan Goldin, Matthew Barney and Kiki Smith, Francis Alys, Elizabeth Peyton, Francesco Vezzoli and Dana Schutz, up to Jennifer Packer and Hayv Kahraman, and many others. The set of exhibited works evokes within each room a motif, a trend, or a central theme in contemporary artistic production: from reflection on the body, gender identity, and sexual orientation, to civil rights and any search for freedom, to themes such as loneliness, introspection, investigation of group and societal dynamics, the breakdown of cultural archetypes, to opening up the ground that collides - now creating openings now closures - the natural world with the artificial one, often the result of contemporary man. These themes and motifs that constantly chase each other within the exhibition path are held together by the dual real-imaginary register that runs through the entire exhibition: a journey between dream and reality in which allegory, mythology, and legend on one side and history, politics, and society on the other side constantly confront and intertwine. The exhibition represents a look at the artistic research of the recent past and present, and is also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of private collecting in art history.
