It is located in the right wing of the Palais Longchamp, a 19th-century building that also houses the Musée de Beaux-arts de Marseille. The museum was established in 1819. Its collection consists of 83,000 species of animals, 200,000 species of plants, 81,000 species of paleontology, and 8,000 types of minerals. Only a part of this collection is open to the public, divided into four rooms: the Safari room, which brings together taxidermied animals; the Provence room, which deals with the fauna and flora of the territory and the region; the osteology room, which gathers skeletons and skulls; the prehistory room, related to evolution. Additionally, the museum organizes numerous conferences and temporary exhibitions.
