The Musée des Beaux Arts de Marseille is one of the main museums in the city of Marseille. It is located in the left wing of the Palais Longchamp, a 19th-century building that also houses another museum, the Musée d'histoire naturelle de Marseille. Established in 1801, the Musée des Beaux Arts de Marseille is one of the 15 first museums created in France by the Consulate. Its permanent collection features works from the 16th to the 19th century, including paintings, sculptures, autograph drawings, and engravings. The painting collection includes works from the French, Italian, Spanish, and Northern schools (Flanders and Holland). Among the main authors of the French School of the 17th and 18th centuries are de Champaigne, La Soeur, Vouet, David, Greuze. There are also many famous names from the 19th century, such as Courbet, Daumier, Ingres, and Millet, as well as many artists more typically from the Provencal school. Among the Italian school artists, one can admire works by Cagnacci, Carracci, Maratta, Reni, and Tiepolo. Particularly noteworthy in the Dutch school is the presence of Rubens. The museum also organizes important temporary exhibitions.
