House of Canuts

La Maison des Canuts is a museum in Lyon. It is located on the Croix-Rousse hill. It is a museum dedicated to the "Canut", that is the silk weavers of Lyon, active in the 19th century. The origin of the word "Canut" is uncertain, perhaps it comes from the "Canette", the spool of silk thread. The Maison des Canuts offers guided tours, enriched by real weaving demonstrations, visible in the open-door atelier, where it is possible to see the work processes in the nineteenth century, through ancient machines still in working order. In the museum you can see the history of the silk weaving industry in Lyon, from 1536 to the present day. The exhibition rooms reflect the origins of silk, its discovery in China, the origin of the Canut group (19th century), their organization and their revolts and their specialization: the manufacture of threads in silk, gold and silver. In addition, in the museum there is a boutique of silk products, made in the Maison des Canuts itself and produced 100% in France.
