In the works of Luca Serra, we never see the generative, primary, and foundational gesture, but only its shroud, a form received as an unexpected gift. What we observe is an imprint, a memory that allows us to imagine what has been lost or distorted in the final stages of the painting process. To better understand the issue, it is appropriate to refer to the artist's words when he explains that the image project "undergoes a pouring, a true casting, through different layers of an acrylic adhesive - which will then become color - on a canvas, subsequently detached from the original support, the final state of the work and different in essence from what has been painted. This process is therefore a kind of alchemical gestation during which the colors, the signs, and the entire pictorial surface are produced as a result of an oxidation, an osmosis between painting and the sensitive and temporary surface of tar, and the assimilation-division of the adhesive of the cast". In these works, there is a will of control in the division of space, and at the same time a loss of it, when the cast reveals and unveils an unexpected pictorial quality, intuited but not defined a priori. The "events" of the work - as the artist calls them - mark times and events that are fundamental in pictorial experimentation: the rubber cast is not just a technique, but a theory that wants to refute itself, verifying the initial ideas and what is actually produced. The artist's palette owes much to his encounter with Spain (the earthy and shadowy tones are those of dust and sand, earth and straw, wood and coal, ash and soot), while the distribution of surfaces can evoke a good part of twentieth-century abstraction, now seemingly infused with a soul that was absent in historical avant-gardes. In an attempt to reduce painting to its essential values, Serra proceeds "blindly" offering us a real without emphasis, rough yet refined, where scraps and aporias surprise the author as well as the viewers.
