The stylistic evolution of Alberto Cavalieri (Genoa, 1927 ~ Reggimonti di Bonassola, 2011) is a journey in search of sign and essentiality. The small tribute dedicated to him offers five mixed techniques on paper dating from the mid-1970s to the very early 1990s. The works are part of a core that also includes a mixed technique on masonite from 1986 and a terracotta from 1985 - recently exhibited at the MAC - which were donated by Silvana Ghezzi Cavalieri to the museum's collections. Setting aside the naturalistic colors and forms of the initial period, Cavalieri's language abstracts until it reaches pure graphic design. From the 1970s, the preference for graphics marks a radical turning point towards lyrical stylization that, marked by progressive phases, keeps pace with introspective development. From compositions with tight weaves and obsessive layers, giving rise to an inextricable horror vacui, the texture later dissolves to form sparse and dynamic lattices that soar in space. According to Roberto Sanesi, Cavalieri strips away every form, obliquely searches for its constructive trait, and decisively discards any symbolic resonance, rejecting the image, retracing the value of the sign. He thus arrives at a sort of refinedly synthetic, functional, and highly sensitive writing. Having erased every naturalistic hypothesis, having renounced representation and begun to exhibit reasoning, not only does Cavalieri highlight the already latent dynamic tension, but, with courage, he directly confronts the value of expressive means as such, and starts again from the sign: which is a symptom, clue, hint from which deductions can be drawn. The same deductions are referred to in the twenty-year period examined here; throughout his laborious journey, the artist has increased the possibilities of interaction between the forces at play, increasingly emphasizing the investigation and balance of tension lines.
