In the heart of Lisbon, at Rua Marechal Saldanha 1, the Museu da Farmácia, inaugurated in 1996, is housed in the historic headquarters of the Associação Nacional das Farmácias. It offers a fascinating journey through 5,000 years of history of medicine and pharmacy.
The collection boasts over 15,000 pieces from ancient civilizations - Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, pre-Columbian cultures, African, Tibetan, Chinese, and Japanese cultures - up to Western and modern pharmacological evolution. On display are reconstructions of historical pharmacies, including a 19th-century Macao pharmacy and a military pharmacy, as well as portable pharmacies used by explorers, astronauts, and royal dignitaries.
Among the most striking pieces are an Egyptian sarcophagus, the costume of a doctor during the Black Plague, and a first aid kit used on the Space Shuttle Endeavour, symbols of a museum that tells not only the care of the body, but also the history of science and society.
