In the heart of Alfama, a few steps from the Tagus River, the Fundação José Saramago is located in the charming Casa dos Bicos, a Renaissance building from 1523 famous for its "beak" facade (diamond points). Declared a national monument, it has become a cultural center and museum dedicated to the Portuguese Nobel Prize-winning author.
Founded by José Saramago himself in June 2007, the Foundation's mission is to promote literature in the Portuguese language, defend human rights, and the environment. Since 2012, the official headquarters is Casa dos Bicos, where the permanent exhibition "A semente e os frutos" is hosted, exploring the life, thoughts, and works of the writer through manuscripts, videos, photographs, and personal items.
