The show

The exhibition "Luigi Ghirri (non) places" , in the Renaissance building of Palazzo Bisaccioni , curated by Massimo Minini , consists of forty photographs from private collections. The aim of the exhibition project, conceived by Roberta Angalone , is to remember the artist by analyzing his photographic research from the point of view of motivations and feelings through a path that touches his points of interest and issues.

Originally Reggiano, thanks to the assiduous attendance of the group of Modenese conceptual artists, Ghirri approaches photography around the 70s, the first shots are taken during the summer holidays or weekends and that's enough for him to realize that the camera it would have been the perfect medium, an incredible visual language capable of satisfying the "desire for infinity that is in each of us".

The exhibition opens with a first introductory section, dedicated to life and the story of his approach to the photographic lens. Born in January 1943, he sees the world change in a few years: from the post-war climate to that of the economic boom and the consequent cultural ferment of the 1960s. In this way, her personality, sensitive to changes and eager for knowledge, inevitably forms; photography becomes the means to look at things in depth, to know their origin and becoming.

The path continues with the sections dedicated to places, the faces of time, non-places, art and finally to Aldo Rossi, with whom he shares an interest in the periphery, a space that, in the opinion of both, contains in itself evocative force of history and memory. Ghirri is attracted to the environment that man inhabits, the one in which he moves, not to changes in the landscape, but to changes in life.

The artist's universe is at times melancholy, enchanted, suspended and romantic, which finds meaning in the little things, in the amazement and wonder that comes from looking at things without the veil of habit.

With his shots he demonstrates how photography generates possible worlds, never artificial and unreal, but which always tell the perception of another truth, the result of the perfect “balance between detection and revelation”. Throughout his career Ghirri photographs an enormous amount of different subjects, deciding not to identify himself with a genre or style as he considers this a risky choice, a limitation of freedom of expression. His is a photograph that is opposed to any kind of linguistic "censorship"; even his investigations remain deliberately open, they do not tend to a single and definitive answer but lend themselves to infinite combinations and interpretations, in line with his idea of photography.
