Deichtorhallen International Art and Photography Hamburg

Deichtorstr. 1–2 Hamburg, Hamburg

In the hall for contemporary art, contemporary artistic positions are presented in large-scale projects. Together with the artists, each exhibition is completely redesigned, sometimes spectacularly furnished and can be experienced as a kind of total work of art. An important factor is the open, modern atmosphere of the northern Deichtorhalle. The art is presented in a special field of tension: between intimate and sublime spaces, between indoor and outdoor use, always in dialogue with the functional, architectural environment. With around 3800 square meters, the hall for contemporary art offers the largest contiguous exhibition space for contemporary art in Europe and thus space for unique artistic installations that are only possible at this location. Numerous solo, themed and group exhibitions have been presented since 1989: Andy Warhol (1993), Post Human – New Forms of Figuration in Contemporary Art (1993), Louise Bourgois (1996), Jason Rhoades (1999), Martin Kippenberger (1999 ), Jonathan Meese (2006), Hans Haacke (2006), Fischli & Weiss (2008), Gilbert & George (2011), Antony Gormley (2012), Picasso in Contemporary Art (2016), Alice Neel (2017), Charline von Heyl (2018), Paolo Pellegrin (2019), William Kentridge (2020) and Tom Sachs' Space Program (2021). Internationally important collections have also been shown time and again in the Hall for Contemporary Art, including the Center Pompidou Collection (1990), the Goetz Collection (1998), the Grässlin Collection (2001), the Julia Stoschek Collection (2010) and the Viehof Collection ( 2016).
