Zoran Music returns home, to Gorizia, in that reality of exchange, encounter, overlapping of diverse cultural matrices that marked his life and returns in the art and memory of an internationally renowned painter. Twenty years after his death in Venice in 2005, the great artist, born in 1909 in Bukovica (Boccavizza), a village now with five hundred inhabitants, just over eight kilometers from Gorizia, a city that, together with the Slovenian Nova Gorica, is sharing the commitment of European Capital of Culture for this 2025, is dedicated - within GO! 2025 - the exhibition "Zoran Music. The Zurich Room, the works and the studio", curated by Daniela Ferretti, which is hosted from May 25 to October 31, 2025 on the entire first floor of Palazzo Attems Petzenstein, the headquarters since 1900 of the Provincial Museums of Gorizia.
The "Zurich Room" is the heart of the exhibition proposed to celebrate Zoran Music. The exhibition path unfolds around a masterful work, created between the late 1940s and the early 1950s, commissioned by the Swiss sisters Charlotte and Nelly Dornacher who, fascinated by the decorations of Zoran's Venetian studio, asked the artist to reproduce them in the basement of their villa in Zollikon, on the hills of Zurich, to transform it into a cozy meeting place for friends. The places of Venice, the little horses, the barges loaded with cattle, the women in multicolored skirts and the large parasols intertwine on one side with the nudes, the portrait of the beloved wife Ida and the clients, and on the other with the views of a dreamy Venice.

"An exhibition dedicated to an extraordinary artist like Anton Zoran Music can only be a source of prestige and pride for ERPAC FVG - Regional Authority for Cultural Heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia, which is the organizer, and for Palazzo Attems Petzenstein, which will host it in its prestigious rooms. "Zoran Music. The Zurich Room, the works and the studio" is proposed as a sort of wonder, not only because it summarizes Music's artistic production towards the end of the 1940s, but also because these are works originally created on the walls and ceiling - but also on linen and jute canvases - of the house of the Swiss sisters Charlotte and Nelly Dornacher, and then recovered by the refined restorer, as well as Music's brother-in-law, Paolo Cadorin so that they could become a traveling exhibition - stated Lydia Alessio-Vernì, General Director of ERPAC FVG - It is an exhibition tailored for GO!2025 thanks to the collaboration of ERPAC with the Charlotte und Nelly Dornacher Stiftung and with the Archivio Barbarigo Cadorin Music, full of its suggestions and the human and cosmopolitan artistic journey of an artist so evidently a son of our border lands".

The Room was welcoming and vital but could have been destroyed and fallen victim to the unpredictable abandonment of those places. Instead, the Room was saved from neglect and demolition, the works are all visible, thanks to the ingenuity of Paolo Cadorin, a great expert in the art of conservation, friend and then brother-in-law of Music who from the beginning applied his knowledge with the perspective of a recovery that would allow to enjoy the work outside the reality for which it was conceived.
The exhibition offers a vision of works that document the intense artistic research of one of the most refined and enigmatic painters of the 20th century, from his beginnings in Zagreb to the journey to Spain, from Venice to Dachau. Returning from captivity to the lagoon city, in the gold of the mosaics, in the light of St. Mark's that opens towards the East to the Dalmatian coast, Music rediscovers his palette and defines his very personal stylistic signature.
