The current museum is set up in the crypt of the Cathedral, precisely in the chapel of St. Joseph. Soon it will be moved to the restored premises of the episcopal seminary, where the exhibition will be enriched by the display of numerous paintings and a valuable seventeenth-century tapestry. The collection includes a considerable number of furnishings and decorations from the Cathedral and other places of worship and confraternities in the diocesan territory. Among the noteworthy artifacts, both in terms of quality and historical relevance to the diocese, is the gilded silver Staurotheca, with hard stones and beads brought to Gerace by Bishop Atanasio Calceopoulos in the 14th century, but actually dating back to the 12th century, probably made in Jerusalem or in the Norman workshops of Sicily.
The richness and quality of the exhibited artifacts ranging from the 16th to the 20th century testify to the great attention of the prelates who succeeded each other on the episcopal throne in endowing the Cathedral with precious furnishings, documenting their taste. Noteworthy, among others, are the chalice of Mons. Diez De Aux dated 1726, a work by a Sicilian silversmith executed in filigree and hard stones, the silver bust of Saint Veneranda, with the monogram of Gregorio Juvarra impressed on it, and the splendid silver sculpture of the Immaculate Conception dated 1772, commissioned by Bishop Scoppa. From the nineteenth century is the rayed monstrance of Mons. Pellicano, a work of great grandeur and richness, and other furnishings by Neapolitan silversmiths such as Gennaro Pace and Romanelli. The exhibition is enriched by wooden sculptures such as the eighteenth-century Saint Philomena, a valuable ivory Christ, and refined sacred vestments.
